Permethrin Lotion is a
topical medication used to treat head lice by paralyzing and
killing the lice and their eggs. It is available over-the-counter in a 1%
concentration (e.g., Nix®) and typically requires one or two applications to be
effective.
Benefits
of Permethrin Lotion:
Ø Effective Treatment: Kills head lice and
their eggs (nits), with a single application often being effective.
Ø Targeted Action: Works directly on the
nervous system of arthropods (lice and mites), which causes respiratory paralysis
and death.
Ø Low Systemic Absorption: Minimal amounts are
absorbed into the human bloodstream, which contributes to a low risk of
systemic toxicity when used as directed.
Ø Easy to Use: Applied
topically to the hair and scalp, with clear instructions for use at home.
Ingredients
of Permethrin lotion:
The
primary active ingredient is permethrin (1% concentration for
the lotion used for head lice).
Inactive
ingredients in brand-name (e.g., Nix®) or generic formulations may include:
Ø Isopropyl alcohol

Usage
Instructions of Permethrin lotion:
Follow
the directions on the product label or your doctor's advice carefully:
Ø Wash hair with a regular shampoo (do not use a
conditioner or a shampoo/conditioner combination product immediately before
use) and rinse thoroughly.
Ø Towel dry the hair until it is only damp.
Ø Shake the permethrin lotion well to mix the
medication evenly.
Ø Apply the lotion to the hair and scalp, making sure
to cover the areas behind the ears and at the back of the neck.
Ø Leave the lotion on the hair and scalp for 10
minutes.
Ø Rinse the hair and scalp with warm water over a sink
(avoid using a shower/bathtub to limit body exposure).
Ø Towel dry hair and use a fine-toothed comb to remove
any dead lice and nits.
Ø Wash hands carefully after the application and
rinsing steps.
Ø A second treatment may be
necessary if live lice are seen 7 days or more after the initial
treatment.
Side
Effects of Permethrin lotion:
Most
side effects are generally mild and temporary:
Ø Burning, stinging, or tingling sensation on the skin or
scalp.
Ø Itching or rash of the skin/scalp area (this may persist
for a few weeks due to an allergic reaction to dead mites/lice and is not
necessarily a sign of treatment failure).
Ø Redness
of skin or scalp.
Ø Numbness
or mild skin irritation.
Ø Dryness or peeling of the skin (in some combination products).
